A work about transformation, listening, and the path toward a more authentic expression.
There are moments when transformation does not mean becoming someone else, but letting go of what no longer allows us to express ourselves freely.
Transmutation emerged from that search: listening more deeply, moving through inner structures, and drawing closer to a truer form of expression.
For Silvina Vergara, the idea of transmutation is connected to alchemy and transformation. Not as an external formula, but as an inner process in which voice, listening, and experience can open a space to recognize what we truly want to express.
From a Learned Form to a Voice of One’s Own
For years, classical vocal training was a fundamental part of Silvina’s artistic journey. She studied singing in San Francisco and worked with several voice teachers.
Over time, however, she began to feel that mastering a single form was not enough.
After her final period devoted to classical singing, a deeper question emerged: what happens when we stop singing only from what we have learned and begin listening to what wants to be expressed from within?
That search led her to explore other languages of voice, movement, consciousness, and sound.
It was not about abandoning what she had learned, but moving through it.
Transmutation
The word Transmutation was chosen precisely for this idea of transformation.
Alchemy. Change. The movement between a familiar form and another that is still emerging.
In the Face to Face interview, Silvina directly connects this work with the search for inner freedom and the need to express one’s true being, rather than continually adapting to what the outside world expects of us.
From this perspective, transformation is not about reaching a perfect version of ourselves.
It is about listening.
Where Does Freedom Begin?
Perhaps it begins when we stop measuring our expression solely by external standards.
When the question is no longer “Is this what I should do?” and begins to become “Does this truly express who I am?”
For Silvina, artistic success is not limited to external recognition either. It has to do with the joy of expressing something authentically and with the possibility that this expression may resonate with others.
Transmutation inhabits that territory.
Between voice and silence. Between the familiar and what has not yet taken form. Between the fear of stepping outside a structure and the freedom to listen to what emerges when we stop holding it in place.
Listening Before Transforming
Transformation does not always begin by doing something.
Sometimes it begins with listening.
Listening to the body. Listening to the voice. Listening to what we have learned to hold back.
And allowing expression to emerge without immediately directing it toward a result.
That journey connects Transmutation with an idea that runs through Silvina’s work today:
Before sound, there is listening.
A Work Within a Larger Journey
Transmutation is part of a broader artistic journey in which singing, music, inner exploration, and listening have come together in different ways.
Seen from today, the work preserves a question that remains relevant:
What happens when we stop trying to become something and begin to express more freely what is already within us?
